2 hurt after boulder strikes home
Two people were injured yesterday when a boulder crashed into their two-story house in Aiea Heights, according to police.
A man, 50, and a woman, 36, were hit in the back bedroom of the first floor of the house shortly after 5 p.m.
Neighbors who rushed to the aid of the injured said they heard a large rumble as if there was an earthquake.
Colin Matsuzaki, who lives across the street, said the woman appeared trapped under a desk that had appeared to have collapsed on top of her. The man was injured and lying in the hallway, he said.
Their injuries were not life-threatening and they were taken to the hospital in stable condition, firefighters said.
Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum said it appeared two boulders crashed into the house — one about 6 feet in diameter, the other about 3 feet.
"The patients were very lucky in this case," Lum said. "If they were maybe three to four feet in the path of the boulder either way, they would’ve gotten more serious injuries."
The boulders created a 6-by-6-foot hole in the wall facing the ridge at 99-868 Holoai St.
Woman killed in car crash named
A 24-year-old Ewa Beach woman who died after a one-vehicle crash on the H-1 freeway Friday morning near Kunia has been identified as Alicia Pada.
An autopsy will be performed tomorrow to determine the exact cause of death, said the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office, which identified Pada.
Pada was thrown from a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup about 4:20 a.m. when it ran up a steep embankment on the right shoulder of the Waianae-bound lanes and flipped several times. She died at the Queen’s Medical Center at 10:35 a.m.
Suspect held in burglary of 2 homes
Alert neighbors in Mililani helped police catch a 34-year-old man Thursday who allegedly had broken into a Kaneohe home only a few hours earlier.
A 33-year-old Kaneohe resident reported to police that two men entered his Hui Palili Place home while he was sleeping about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.
When he confronted the intruders, one in his 30s and another in his 20s, the older man threatened him with a screwdriver. The resident tried to call police, but the older man took his cell phone, then the men took off in an SUV, police said. The victim also found his car was broken into.
About seven hours later, neighbors in Mililani reported seeing a suspicious man enter the back of a Hokulewa Loop home while the owner was away, police said.
Responding police officers found the man hiding inside the home with an item from the house in his pants pocket.
Police booked the man on suspicion of first-degree burglary. He was later arrested him in connection with the Kaneohe break-in.
