Feeding the fish behind Egypt shark attacks

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — Experts investigating an unusual series of shark attacks in one of the world’s top diving destinations have recommended banning the feeding of fish around the resort, among other measures.

Governor of South Sinai Mohammed Shousha says Egyptian and foreign scientists also recommended building observation towers on the beach and running naval patrols to alert tourists against possible shark attacks.

Last week a shark killed a 70-year-old German tourist while she was snorkeling, just a few days after sharks mauled three Russians and a Ukrainian tourist.

The experts also mentioned overfishing and climate change as other possible reasons driving sharks closer to shore in search of food.
