State panel to hear shippers on illegal fireworks
The state Illegal Fireworks Task Force is set to hear from freight shippers about inspection they conduct of cargo from the mainland.
State Sen. Will Espero, co-chair of the panel, says he and other members suspect that much of the illegal fireworks that enter Hawaii do so in cargo containers from the mainland that undergo almost no scrutiny for the materials.
He says about 200,000 containers arrive from the mainland each year.
The panel is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. on Monday at the state Capitol. It will hear from representatives of Matson Navigation and Horizon Lines, the state’s two biggest shippers.
It is the task force’s last meeting of the year. Espero says it will produce a report recommending new legislation early next year.
