Bank robber might be serial bandit

The downtown branch of Hawaii National Bank was robbed yesterday by a lone bandit who police say might be the same person who robbed another downtown bank last week.

The man entered the bank at 841 Bishop St. at 10:25 a.m. yesterday and demanded money from a teller. No weapon was seen and the robber left on foot.

Police said he might have also been the person who robbed the Territorial Savings Bank at 1000 Bishop St. on Thursday.

He is described as 35 to 40 years old, 6 feet tall and 200 pounds.

Yesterday, he was wearing a light gray polo shirt, long pants and a dark cap.

Dead hiker ID’d as man from Kauai

The 44-year-old man found dead on the Papaikou beach trail Sunday has been identified as Norman Lyman III of Kauai, Hawaii County police said.

A coroner’s inquest will be held to determine the cause of death. Police said they do not suspect foul play.

Beach-goers called South Hilo patrol officers at 6:24 p.m. after finding Lyman face down and unresponsive on the trail.

County firefighters took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Intruder spurs lockdown of Kona school

Officials ordered a lockdown at the Kealakehe High School campus in Kona yesterday after a man allegedly displayed a knife to a security guard.

Hawaii County police were called at 9:16 a.m. and arrested the intruder.

The man, a Hookena resident, displayed a knife when a school security guard told him he was on campus without permission, police said.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of trespassing, terroristic threatening, promoting a detrimental drug, promoting a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital after complaining of back pain and a minor laceration on his ear from the struggle with the guard.
