Storms bring debris, and sharks, to Hawaii shores

Regular beachgoers who brave the debris from Hawaii’s recent storms should be on the lookout for another challenge, the type with big teeth.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is warning that heavy rains may increase the presence of sharks in nearshore waters.

In a statement Wednesday, department interim Chairman William J. Aila Jr. said dead animals, stream fish weakened by exposure to salt water, and rubbish attract sharks.

He says murky water conditions found near stream mouths are known to be frequented by sharks.

Still, Aila says the chances of getting bit by a shark in those conditions are less than one in a million.
