Woman sued for car crash

The girlfriend of former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has been sued by the attorney for a Big Island doctor following a head-on collision Nov. 19 that left the doctor with life-threatening injuries.

The lawsuit, filed in Big Island Circuit Court last week, alleges that Shakti Stream drove her Toyota SUV "in a careless and negligent manner" that caused her to cross Queen Kaahumanu Highway’s center line near Makalawena Beach in North Kona and hit Dr. Theresa Wang’s 1996 Saab sedan head-on. Both Brennan and Stream were injured in the crash but were treated and released from different hospitals.

Wang underwent at least a half-dozen surgeries for injuries that included three spinal fractures; an injury to a blood vessel to her brain that caused paralysis, swelling of the brain and a coma; multiple broken bones; and a collapsed lung, the medical director of trauma services at the Queen’s Medical Center said last month.

On Wednesday, Wang was transferred from Queen’s to Craig Hospital in Denver, said her Honolulu attorney, Ian Mattoch, and is being cared for by the director of Craig’s brain injury rehabilitation unit.

Convicted lawyer censured

The Hawaii Supreme Court has issued a public censure against a Honolulu lawyer after he was convicted of violating state tax laws.

A statement from the court on Wednesday said Thomas Collins III received the censure after his deferred acceptance of guilty and no-contest pleas on several counts that he failed to file state income and general excise tax returns, which he agreed violated Hawaii’s Rules of Professional Conduct. A court spokeswoman said Collins can still practice law.
