The Pacific Justice & Reconciliation Center is inviting the public to attend the 18th annual Hookuikahi-Reconciliation Events starting Friday through Jan. 17 at various sites.

The events commemorate the formal apology to the Hawaiian people for the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893 by Paul Sherry, then-president of the United Church of Christ, on Jan. 17, 1993, in Honolulu, according to Haaheo Guanson of the center.

Sherry extended the apology to acknowledge the role of descendants of Christian missionaries in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, as well as the church’s support of the overthrow and "assumed superiority of the ‘elevated state of Christian civilization,’" an essay in the book "UCC@50" states.

Here is the schedule:

» Friday, 6 p.m.: 18th Reconciliation Commemorative Service at Kaumakapili Church

» Jan. 15, 9 a.m.: Presentation of hookupu at Liliuokalani’s crypt at the Royal Mausoleum; 10 a.m., walking tour of Iolani Palace grounds and photo session at the coronation stand, where apology was issued

» Jan. 16: Prayer request to all churches, temples, synagogues and individuals for reconciliation and healing

» Jan. 17, 8 a.m.: Martin Luther King Jr. Parade from Magic Island to Kapiolani Park

A representative from each church, temple and synagogue is asked to participate in the parade.
