No. 5 AOP downs No. 1 Kamehameha

For the second time in three weeks, Kamehameha’s kryptonite is spelled A-O-P.
Academy of the Pacific handed the Warriors a 66-61 loss last night, stunning the top-ranked team in the state and sending the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I boys basketball standings into more turmoil.
A crowd of more than 200 watched at Charles B. Wang Gymnasium on the campus of Le Jardin Academy. AOP’s previous win over Kamehameha was at the ‘Iolani Classic, also when Kamehameha was ranked No. 1.
This time, Micah Dunhour and Moritz Krume scored 18 points each to spark the fifth-ranked Dolphins. Dunhour, a 6-foot-5 senior, had 12 rebounds and shot 7-for-13 from the field. Krume shot 8-for-12 and grabbed eight boards. His physical presence inside made a huge difference for AOP, which lost to Punahou last week in a bruising battle.
"I have to thank Coach Ryan (Hogue) for his help. At practice, he bangs me around," said Krume, a 6-6 junior from Cologne, Germany. "I can play physical now."
"I’ve been waiting for Mo to come out of his European shell," AOP coach Wally Marciel said. "He had good cutbacks and he’s learned his lesson from when he played (Punahou’s DeForest) Buckner. He was the difference tonight."

Micah Christenson led Kamehameha with 22 points (7-for-19 shooting) and 10 boards. Dyrbe Enos added 14 points.
AOP had a 28-26 edge on the boards, but shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the field and committed just 10 turnovers against Kamehameha’s trapping man-to-man defense.
Dunhour and reserve guard Drew Viena were key reasons for AOP’s improved ballhandling against pressure.
Kona Makaula added 11 points, including back-to-back midrange jumpers in the third quarter when the Dolphins fell behind by six points and seemed to be on the ropes.
They switched to a 2-3 zone because of foul trouble for Makaula and point guard Michael Urcia, and Kamehameha went cold from long range. AOP went on a 14-6 run to close the third quarter, taking a 40-38 lead on Dunhour’s drive to the bucket as time expired.
Kamehameha shot 2-for-14 from 3-point range from that point, but was within 48-47 after Makoa Camanse-Stevens’ layup with 5 minutes to go.
AOP went on an 11-2 run with fastbreak buckets by Viena, Dunhour and David Daniel. After a tip-in by Dunhour and a foul shot by Daniel, the Dolphins led 59-49 with 1:33 to go.
Missed one-and-ones by Dunhour allowed Kamehameha to cut the lead to five, but Daniel, Dunhour and Krume sealed the win with 7-for-8 shooting at the foul line in the final 1:01.
Kamehameha (4-2) fell to fourth place in the tight ILH. Punahou (6-1) is at the top, followed by AOP (5-1) and ‘Iolani (4-1).
"It’s too early to tell," Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "You’ve got to expect to win and execute. Kudos to AOP. They made plays, effort plays. They outplayed us. We probably shot 20 percent."
The Warriors shot 35 percent from the field (21-for-60) and finished with 11 turnovers. They were 10-for-36 from beyond the 3-point arc.
