Stuart Appleby eagled the par-4 No. 16 hole on the way to a 6-under par 64 and the first round lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Friday at Waialae Country Club.

Appleby’s second shot on the 417-yard hole went into the cup from 163 yards and put him at 5-under par for the round. He then birdied No. 17.

Appleby shot even par the first eight holes, and then birdied or eagled five of the last 10.

Nine players finished the day a shot back at 5-under 65. They are Justin Rose, Mark Wilson, Nate Smith, Steve Marino, Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman, Michael Connell, Shigeki Maruyama and Ben Martin.

Chris Riley and W.C. Liang both shot 66.

Defending champion Ryan Palmer shot 2-under 68.

Amateur David Saka, a University of Hawaii golfer, shot 1-over 71, as did pro Dean Wilson of Kaneohe.

Hilo pro Kevin Hayashi shot 75. Oahu resident and PGA Tour veteran Dave Eichelberger shot 76.

The first round was postponed on Thursday due to rain. The plan now is for the second round to be played Saturday and the third and fourth rounds Sunday.
