No. 5 Punahou rocks Mid-Pacific

She’s a comet. She’s a rock.

Hailey-Ann Maeda, dubbed the "rock" by coach Mike Taylor on senior night, was solid from start to finish as No. 5 Punahou overwhelmed No. 7 Mid-Pacific 57-40 last night before about 500 fans at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Maeda, a 5-foot-11 senior post, had 21 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks to power the Buffanblu. Punahou improved to 9-2 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

"It was a great win. We played together and we worked hard," Maeda said.

The Buffanblu will visit ‘Iolani (9-2) tomorrow night in the final regular-season game with the league championship at stake. The losing team will finish second and enter the ILH playoffs to compete for the league’s last state tournament berth.

"We came out with a lot of intensity and a lot of fire," Taylor said. "We took care of the ball."

Last night, Punahou dispatched an opponent that had proven tough in two earlier matchups. The teams split two games, with the visiting team winning each time by six-point margins.

This time, the Owls struggled with one starter out with an ankle injury, and when point guard Kiana Robertson left in the first quarter with a chest injury. Robertson, who ignited Mid-Pacific’s transition attack with two points and three rebounds in the first 2 minutes, was in severe pain and did not return.

Punahou dominated the boards 39-22 and handled MPI’s halfcourt zone and man defenses efficiently. The Buffanblu shot 44 percent from the field (22-for-50) and were 10-for-14 (71 percent) at the foul line.

Reina Furuya nailed three treys and finished with 16 points for the Buffanblu (14-2 overall).

"She hasn’t had a game like that here (on varsity), but she’s lit it up at JV," Taylor said of Furuya, a softball standout who will play at Penn State.

Julia Brand was a key contributor as a distributor on offense and stopper on defense, and Mysha Sataraka hustled for nine boards.

Mahina Docktor led MPI (4-6 ILH) with 11 points and five boards. Ashley Yamachika added nine points. MPI struggled from the field (11-for-40, 28 percent) and trailed 29-9 at intermission after a physical first half that left Owl players sprawled across the floor like bowling pins.

With a spark from the bench, coach Wes Masuda’s squad used fullcourt pressure to surprise the Buffanblu, who committed eight turnovers in the second half. The Owls who shot 14-for-19 from the foul line after intermission, cut a 24-point deficit down to 45-32 after a coast-to-coast layup by Yamachika with 5 minutes to play.

Maeda answered with six points in a row, however, to give Punahou a 51-34 lead. MPI got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

"The adrenaline rush was there. We tried to encourage each other. We had each other’s back," Yamachika said.

Punahou spent postgame in a lengthy, elaborate senior-night celebration that included costumes, dancing and skits.
