No. 1 ‘Iolani outlasts No. 4 AOP in OT

Trevyn Tulonghari scored 13 points and Reid Saito added 12, including four free throws in overtime, as No. 1 ‘Iolani escaped with a 49-44 win over No. 4 Academy of the Pacific last night.
A frenzied crowd of about 400 at Charles B. Wang Gymnasium on the campus of Le Jardin Academy saw ‘Iolani improve to 8-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (16-4 overall). AOP’s league title hopes took a hit as the Dolphins fell to 6-3 (16-6 overall).
"We had fun. Every team has its problems. Ours was we weren’t having any fun, so we decided to do that," Tulonghari said. "That’s when we play our best."
It was a thriller in the first meeting between the teams this season.
"I knew they were going to be tough, but I didn’t want it to go to overtime," Tulonghari said.
Kamehameha’s win over Punahou last night left the Warriors in second place at 8-2. Punahou (9-3) and AOP, which will visit Kamehameha tomorrow night, are in a battle for second place.

The ILH regular-season runner-up gets an automatic state berth, as does the first-place finisher. The rest of the ILH will battle in a playoff tourney for third place and the league’s final state-tournament berth.
"We missed a ton of free throws, but in overtime, we closed it out strong," Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said.
‘Iolani was 1-for-5 at the line in the fourth quarter, but 6-for-6 in overtime.
It was an unusually messy night for ‘Iolani, which committed 18 turnovers against AOP’s halfcourt man defense. AOP struggled offensively, pushed well beyond the 3-point arc to start its offense many times.
Kona Makaula had 10 points and Micah Dunhour added nine for AOP. The two combined to shoot 6-for-21 from the field and were in foul trouble in the second half.
"We had no intensity. The first half, we weren’t there," Dunhour said.
Tulonghari and reserve guard Adam Ching were clutch in overtime. AOP, saddled with foul trouble, switched to a 2-3 zone and Ching swished a trey from the left wing to start the extra period. Moments later, Tulonghari drilled a 3 from the same left wing and the Raiders had a 43-39 lead with 2:38 remaining.
"Ching hit a big 3. We left him alone," AOP coach Walter Marciel said. "Then Trevyn hit a big 3, and we’re down four. We held the No. 1 team to three points in the fourth quarter, but they hit big shots."
AOP fought back to 43-42, but Jourdan Simmonds sank two foul shots to give ‘Iolani a three-point lead with 45 seconds to go.
After Makaula scored on a backdoor layup for AOP, Saito swished two free throws for a 47-44 ‘Iolani lead with 18 seconds left.
Saito, a first-team All-State cornerback known for his timely interceptions, then picked off a backdoor pass by AOP’s David Daniel. The senior guard then hit two foul shots with 4.7 seconds remaining to seal the win.
"I was covering Micah. We tried to give them a different look after he scored four straight points," Saito said. "We had good ball pressure. At first he was trying to v-cut to get open."
‘Iolani led for most of regulation, opening a 20-11 lead with 2 minutes left in the first half. ‘Iolani had a 37-30 lead with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter when AOP rallied.
Drew Viena drove for a three-point play and Michael Urcia hit two free throws to bring the Dolphins within 37-35 with 1:44 to go.
The Raiders were tentative throughout the fourth, playing keep-away, but committing six turnovers. Dunhour came through with two free throws to tie game with 3.8 seconds left in the quarter. A steal by Makaula at halfcourt on ‘Iolani’s inbounds pass gave him a 3-point look before the buzzer, but he missed from the left wing.
