5 Things We Love

5 Things We Love is a shortlist of newly discovered stuff you have got to see, hear, wear, use or eat. What are you loving this week? Send a brief description of your latest favorite thing, where to find it and how much it costs, along with your name and contact info to features@staradvertiser.com.

(1) A touch of silver

I never knew how much I needed a silver Sharpie pen until I bought one. It’s great for labeling dark-colored school supplies, signing photo cards and marking your tape dispenser at work. The pens are available at Walmart, Longs and office supply stores for $3 to $4 for a two pack. —Donica Kaneshiro

(2) A creamy indulgence without the guilt

For those of us who love ice cream but are trying to watch our waistlines, Skinny Cow’s new low-fat cups make the perfect indulgence. The treats come in five flavors, giving you the delicious taste you’re craving in a convenient, portion-controlled cup. My favorite is the chocolate fudge brownie, and my fiance loves the dulce de leche — each only 150 calories. Under $2 at most supermarkets ———Nicole Sitze, Mililani

(3) Wrap up a Thai specialty

There’s much more to Thai food than "Evil Jungle Prince" and Pad Thai if you know where to go and what to order. Take Yum Nam Khao — a mixture of rice with a little bit of curry, cooked twice and mixed with Lao sausage, mint, shallots, cilantro, lime, fish sauce and other spices. Spoon it into lettuce and eat it like Thai tacos. You can’t get it in restaurants that cater to farang (foreigners). Try Siam Garden ($10) or Maunakea Marketplace ($8). Some Thai karaoke bars like the Sabai Club ($10) also make it, but it’s not on the English menu. —Craig Gima

(4) Forget where you are? This app can help

"Here I Am" is an iPhone app that does just one thing awfully well — it tells you, and others, where you are. It does so by triangulating your location and then translating it into precise latitude and longitude, which you can then e-mail to whomever, including yourself.

When the e-mail arrives (pretty much instantly) the coordinates are further translated into HTML coding that provides a link directly to Google Maps. It’s accurate within a few dozen feet.

There are variations of this app. The one I use is free from Arboretum Software. —Burl Burlingame

(5) White tea offers sweet release

I love coffee with all my heart, but sometimes it charges me up so much I need to give my poor system a break. During those times, I turn to my tin of Island Essence White Tea Serenade, a lovely tea that incorporates marigold and safflower petals for a refreshingly light, fruity taste. Though it’s light on caffeine, I still get enough of a lift to carry me through a bustling workday. A 1.78-ounce tin for $13.95 goes a long way. Visit www.teachest.com. —Joleen Oshiro
