Farrington presses on

Farrington's Kirsten Liana drove past Toe Motu of Kapolei during the Governors' win last night.
They tried the new look part-time last week.
This time, the Lady Governors wore their new look with full-time ferocity. The Govs pressed and pressed their way to a resounding 61-44 win over Kapolei to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference championship last night.
A raucous crowd of about 1,000 at Mililani High School gym saw Farrington (16-9) win its third OIA girls basketball title in a row. Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo and Kirsten Liana scored 20 points each to power the Govs, who earned a seeded berth and first-round bye at the state tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
Farrington barely got past Kapolei (21-4) earlier in the double-elimination tourney, 59-53 in overtime. This time, coach Caroline Tatupu set her mind on using a trapping fullcourt defense for the entire game instead of just a half.
Kapolei, which needed a win to force a winner-take-all game, wilted under the pressure with 35 turnovers.
"I’m very happy and proud," Tatupu said. "We worked very hard to get to the playoffs and our next goal was to win the championship game."

Sixth-ranked Farrington got a big boost from several role players. Ashley Savusa kept the Govs going with two 3-point bombs and finished with nine points, taking advantage of Kapolei’s double-teams down low on Tatupu-Leopoldo and Liana.
Tatupu-Leopoldo shot just 2-for-11 from the field, but was 16-for-20 from the foul line and doled out five assists.
"I feel relaxed," Tatupu-Leopoldo said. "We just wanted to run. We didn’t want to play into (Kapolei’s) hands."
Liana had a game-high 11 rebounds and was 8-for-11 from the charity stripe, and her crisp ballhandling was key against the athletic, pressing Hurricanes.
"Everyone contributed tonight," she said. "It was fun. Everybody did their job. It’s a blessing to get three titles. I’m thankful for that."
Krystal Jacobs finished with 17 points to lead No. 7-ranked Kapolei, but no other ‘Cane scored in double figures. They just couldn’t get into their halfcourt offense often enough.
Farrington, ranked No. 6, spotted Kapolei a 6-0 lead, then took command. Savusa had six first-half points and Diena Peterson scored five off the bench as the Govs soared to a 23-10 lead.
Kapolei got within 31-22 by halftime, but Farrington opened the third quarter with a 12-5 run and never looked back.
Most of the Govs had "THREEPEAT" T-shirts on by the time they shook hands with the Hurricanes after the game.
"Every title is tough," Tatupu said. "The more you win, the more pressure you feel."
