Volleyball magazine honors Danielson
Hawaii junior hitter Kanani Danielson was named to Volleyball magazine’s All-America second team yesterday.
Danielson was the only Rainbow Wahine chosen by the magazine, which selected three teams of 10 players each. The two-time first-team AVCA All-American averaged 4.59 kills per set last season en route to becoming the 17th UH player to reach the 1,000-kill career mark.
Lajola out of Honolulu Challenger
Jesse Witten reached the quarterfinals of the Honolulu Challenger at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday, beating Hawaii’s Dennis Lajola 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5) last night.
Witten, ranked 224 in the world, will play No. 2 seed Robert Kendrick today. Other quarterfinals include Michael Russell vs. Vasek Pospisil, Bobby Reynolds vs. Alex Kuznetsov and Ryan Sweeting vs. Ryan Harrison.
HPU women win 12th straight
Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored what proved to be the game-winning basket with 41 seconds in overtime as Hawaii Pacific won its 12th in a row, holding off Academy of Art 67-65 in a Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game in San Francisco.
Awa-Williams had a chance to win it for the Sea Warriors (13-3, 7-0 PacWest) in regulation but missed two free throws with 14 seconds remaining. She made up for it in overtime to beat the Urban Knights (5-12, 3-5).
Grand Canyon rolls past Chaminade
Rosalyn Nelson scored 24 points and No. 12 Grand Canyon overwhelmed Chaminade 105-36 in a PacWest women’s basketball game in Phoenix.
Jordan Ahakuelo led the Silverswords (1-11, 1-3) with 10 points and five rebounds against the Antelopes (16-2, 4-1).
Vulcans fall on road
Hillary Hurley scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as Hawaii-Hilo fell to Dominican 61-56 in a PacWest women’s basketball game in San Rafael, Calif.
The Vulcans dropped to 7-8 overall, 3-4 in conference. The Penguins improved to 4-13 and 2-5.
Seasiders drop 12th straight
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s basketball team lost its 12th game in a row last night, falling to No. 11 Dixie State 85-52 in St. George, Utah.
Richelle Rieben hit four from long range for all of her 12 points. Kristen Harley also had 12 points for BYUH (1-13, 0-5) against the Red Storm (15-1, 5-0).
BYUH men stay perfect in PacWest
Jet Chang scored 19 points and Jake Dastrup hit five of Brigham Young-Hawaii’s 11 3-pointers as the Seasiders remained unbeaten in PacWest men’s basketball with an 83-61 win over Dixie State last night in St. George, Utah.
Dastrup finished with 17 points for the Seasiders (10-4, 5-0). Ale Okesene added 15 points — 12 coming in a 25-3 second-half run — and Marques Whippy had 10 points and 11 rebounds for BYUH against the Red Storm (10-5, 3-2).

Jason Jackson scored 15 points and Hawaii Pacific used a late rally to pull away from Academy of Art 68-64 in a PacWest men’s basketball game last night in San Francisco.
Kyle Allen added 13 and LaBrent Chappell came off the bench for 10 points for the Sea Warriors (9-10, 4-3) against the Urban Knights (5-13. 2-7).
Chaminade loses first conference game
Mamadou Diarra scored 17 points with 10 rebounds, but Chaminade could not overcome 12 turnovers when losing to Grand Canyon last night 66-59 in a PacWest men’s basketball game in Phoenix.
Shane Hanson and Steven Bennett each added 10 points for the Silverswords (11-6, 4-1) against the Antelopes (9-6, 4-1).
Vulcans stunned on road
Dominican won its first game of the season last night, handing Hawaii-Hilo its third consecutive loss, 79-73, in a PacWest men’s basketball game in San Rafael, Calif.
Justin Smith scored 19 points and Zach Wilde 14 for the Vulcans (12-6, 4-3), who again struggled from the free-throw line (12-for-22). The Penguins (1-16, 1-6) were 31-for-37 from the line.
