Driver uninjured as Handi-Van burns
Police closed all northbound lanes of the H-2 near the Mililani interchange for about half an hour yesterday after a city Handi-Van caught fire.
Traffic was diverted at the Ka Uka Boulevard interchange in Waipio after the 2:05 p.m. incident.
The Handi-Van’s driver, its sole occupant, noticed smoke coming from the passenger compartment, said Capt. Terry Seelig, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department. She immediately drove to the right shoulder and was able to get out unharmed, Seelig said.
It appeared that the fire began inside the engine compartment and moved into the passenger area of the van, which was deemed a total loss, Seelig said.
Men ID’d in ocean-related incidents
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified a Japanese national and a Waianae man who died in separate incidents in Kailua Bay and Kaena Point State Park.
A 53-year-old man who died while swimming in Kailua Bay yesterday was identified as Juichi Fukuyama of Azumino City in the Nagano province in Japan.

City lifeguards found Fukuyama unresponsive around 12:55 p.m., brought him ashore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Paramedics took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A man who collapsed at Hercules Rock at Kaena Point State Park on Sunday afternoon was identified as Houston Anderson III of Waianae.
He was taken to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center in "extremely critical condition" and was later pronounced dead.

Kapaa man is injured in 1-car crash
A 29-year-old Kapaa man was injured in a one-car crash in Wailua Homesteads yesterday morning.
Chaise Lindstedt was driving toward Wailua Homesteads in a sport utility vehicle on Kuamoo Road near the Holoholoku Heiau at 2:30 a.m. when his vehicle went off the roadway and flipped in a pasture.
Kauai firefighters removed Lindstedt from the vehicle, and medical personnel took him to Wilcox Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Lindstedt was the only person in the vehicle.
Kuamoo Road was closed for two hours following the crash and was reopened at about 5:30 a.m.
Police were investigating the accident.
