Alleged Reynolds robber was worker

The alleged mastermind of last week’s armed robbery of a Reynolds Recycling center used to work for the company and therefore knew critical information used in the heist, including the scheduling of employees, said Keith Seto, deputy prosecutor.

The robbers got away with about $1,200, he said.

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging five people with crimes in connection with the Jan. 25 robbery of the collection station in Kalama Valley. A police pursuit and manhunt for the robbers caused the temporary shutdown of several Kailua schools and surrounding roadways.

The indictment charges Bronson Maneafaga Cambra, 25, and John Andrew Cullen, 27, with first-degree robbery and Robert Berrios III, 32, with being an accomplice. The indictment also charges Terii Nakaahiki, 39, and Pomaikai Ah Mook Sang, 20, with drug and drug paraphernalia possession.

Bail for Cambra, Cullen and Berrios is $100,000 each, while bail for Nakaahiki and Ah Mook Sang is $20,000 each.

Driver is hurt in 2-car crash

An 81-year-old Kauai woman remained hospitalized yesterday following a two-car crash on Kaumualii Highway near Knudsen Gap at Poipu.

Esther Richman of Koloa was in fair condition at Wilcox Hospital.

Her Toyota Camry crossed the center line and crashed into a westbound Mazda pickup truck driven by Edwin Pickop, 59, of Lihue. The accident happened at 10:46 a.m. Wednesday near mile marker 6, officials said.

Pickop was treated and released from Wilcox. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Motorists told to slow down

The Kauai Police Department will launch an anti-speeding campaign next week, focusing on construction zones.

"We don’t need another traffic accident to recognize that we should all be taking more preventive measures," Alejandre Quibilan, assistant chief of the Patrol Services Bureau, said in an announcement yesterday. "Everyone will need to learn to plan ahead and give themselves the added time to get to their destinations safely."

Quibilan urged drivers to follow construction zone speed limits at all hours, not just during construction.

Speed limits at each construction zone are set by the state Highways Division based on the project and location. The fine for speeding in a construction zone is $297.

Police seek Hilo vandal

Big Island police are asking for tips to catch the vandal or vandals who damaged walls with graffiti Wednesday night at Hilo Union School.
