HPD pays $228,247 to protect Obamas
President Barack Obama’s recent holiday visit to Oahu cost the Honolulu Police Department $228,247 in overtime, HPD reported yesterday.
That is slightly less than the $248,000 in overtime costs HPD reported it spent to help protect Obama during his family’s trip here the previous year. A 2008 visit by Obama, who was then president-elect, cost HPD $107,000.
Obama arrived Dec. 22, several days after first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha took up temporary residence at a private home on Kailuana Place in Kailua. The entire family departed Jan. 4 after a mostly low-key visit punctuated by golf and shave ice outings, primarily on the Windward side, as well as visits to Alan Wong’s Restaurant, the Honolulu Zoo and Sea Life Park. The Obamas also spent ample time at Marine Corps Base Hawaii working out, golfing and enjoying Pyramid Rock Beach.
