A Kailua man who apparently didn’t want to pay for parking at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was arrested for reckless endangering after he nearly hit two people, police said.

Diane Chang, a UH Manoa spokeswoman, said a parking supervisor put an immobilization boot on the wheel of a 23-year-old man’s car Monday. But the suspect apparently drove off.

The supervisor noticed the car in front of her vehicle on Maile Way Tuesday at about 10:30 a.m. and radioed a parking guard to stop a Rainbow Shuttle, which was in front of the suspect’s car.

The supervisor approached the man’s car after he stopped and questioned him about what happened to the boot, Chang said. The suspect then allegedly drove onto the median, entered the oncoming lane of traffic on Maile Way and re-entered his original lane and drove away.

She said the suspect nearly hit a moped rider traveling in the opposite direction on Maile Way, the supervisor and the Rainbow Shuttle van.

Police were called and arrested the man at about 3:30 p.m. near the student services building at 2600 Campus Road during a check of the area.

He was released pending further investigation.

Chang said the man is not a student.
