Isle music stars gear for Grammys

It’s Grammy weekend, and many of Hawaii’s music stars are converging on Los Angeles for Sunday’s awards ceremony at the Staples Center.

Amy Hanaiali’i, one of the nominees in the best Hawaiian music album category for "Amy Hanaiali’i and Slack Key Masters of Hawaii," said she is busy preparing for the big night.

"I leave on Friday to LAX," she said in an excerpt from her blog post at honolulupulse.com. "In the meantime I’m prepping, making sure bags are packed, the eyelashes and the makeup are packed — that is KEY, of course, and the heels. Finding the right shoe is an art form since I am an Amazon!"

Slack-key master Cyril Pahinui, who performs on the same nominated album, said he will be wearing "my black tux and two-tone shoes" — and a touch of the islands.

"I always wear a lei since that ties us to our traditions. … It is important for me to keep to the traditions," he said in his blog post. "So, I have ordered tuberose lei for the whole gang going up. … Mostly I selected tuberose since it will travel well and last longer. Saturday night we will wear pikake twined with ginger."

Tia Carrere, the 2009 Grammy winner in the category, is another nominee with her "Huana ke Aloha" album, which was produced by Daniel Ho.

Ho copped his own nomination for "Polani." Also in the running are "The Legend" by Ledward Kaapana, and "Maui On My Mind — Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar" by Jeff Peterson.

Peterson said it will be easy to spot the Hawaii musicians at Sunday’s Grammy ceremony. "Just look for the leis. We are bringing up tuberose, awapuhi and maile."

He plans to attend a party for all the Grammy nominees Saturday night at Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. "It will be great to be there with Amy, Cyril, Dennis Kamakahi, Chino Montero, Sonny Lim and my wife, Kahealani. It will be a blast," Peterson said in his blog for honolulupulse.com.

Ho said he isn’t too worried about pulling an outfit together for the ceremony.

"Come Sunday morning, I’ll dust off my black shoes, put on my one and only suit, and be off. I’m a guy. It’s easy," he said in his post.

A delayed broadcast of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards will air at 7 p.m. Sunday on KGMB.
