Underdogs still alive

He’s a jiujitsu fighter from Sunset Beach, but in the world of high school wrestling, Holden Takahashi is a battler from ‘Iolani School.
Takahashi is also an underdog in the 132-pound weight class who scored a key win yesterday in the opening rounds of the Chevron/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships. A crowd of 1,034 turned out at Blaisdell Center. The tourney resumes at 10 a.m. today following weigh-in at 8:30. Finals begin at 3 p.m.
Takahashi, a junior, knocked off No. 2 seed Jordan Enos of Hilo in the quarterfinals, 12-7.
"It means if I win my next match, I’ll be in the championship (final). That’s a big deal," Takahashi said.
He took an early lead on Enos and held on.

"The front headlock didn’t work at all. It was a lot of taking down," said Takahashi, who led 6-4 after one period. "It feels real different from last year."
Takahashi won his opener, 9-2, against Molokai’s Kalen Inouye.
"I tried to stay in the neutral position and save energy. A lot of taking down and going back to neutral," Takahashi said. "The front headlocks worked well."
As a sophomore in last season’s state tourney, he was done after his second match.
"I feel more at home, so to say. It’s not as strange," he said.
Takahashi, a junior who placed third in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, will face a rival in today’s semifinal round: Tyson Kuahine of Kamehameha.
"I only wrestled him once and it was kind of close, 8-5 or something. I know what to expect," Takahashi said. "A lot of neutral. He can really stall the clock out, really lanky. A lot of good technique. If you take advantage of the moment, you can put him on his back."
Unlike many wrestlers in the lighter weights, Takahashi hasn’t dealt with weight issues. Last year, he was a buffet-line king during a breakfast at Duke’s (seven servings) during the season. Even now, he’ll chow down occasionally at Ted’s Bakery, in his neighborhood.
"The mixed plate has teriyaki beef," said Takahashi, wh o began jiujitsu as a 5-year-old. "After Officials (tournament) on Maui, it got real easy. I weighed in 2 pounds under today. I can eat a sandwich or something."
The top seed at 132, Punahou’s Todd Murakawa, will meet fourth-seeded Derek Lee Loy of Moanalua.
In team competition, four-time defending state champion Punahou (106) has a seven-point lead over Kamehameha in the boys standings. The loss of Evan Johnson, a contender at 215, to a severe ankle injury yesterday puts the Buffanblu in a tough spot. With each win worth one point, each pin worth two and a first-place finish valued at 16 points, Johnson’s injury could cost Punahou roughly 20 points.
Lahainaluna (70), Pearl City (62.5) and Campbell (52) round out the top five thus far.
On the girls side, two-time defending state champ Punahou (69) and Pearl City (62) are atop the standings. Kahuku and Lahainaluna are tied in third (59.5) and Aiea (44) is in fifth.
"Pearl City is the favorite," Punahou co-coach Jimmy Takatsuka insisted. "They’ve got a lot of bodies."
Kahuku coach Reggie Torres was glad to see his 175-pound contender, Joreece Peapealalo, advance past defending state champion Kaimana Lundquist. Peapealalo pinned Lundquist in 1 minute, 55 seconds.
"(Lundquist) had a bad shoulder from even before the season," Torres noted. "Joreece took her down and transitioned from takedown to pin. It affected (Lundquist’s) shoulder. She couldn’t defend herself."
The upset win came after Peapealalo pinned Hilo’s Kawehi Hausman. Peapealalo missed last year’s state tourney with a knee injury. Now she’s in the semifinals, where she’ll meet Janelle Fuamatu (Pearl City).
"They went back and forth," Torres said of the rivalry this season.
Lundquist missed much of the regular season with the shoulder injury, which occurred during the summer while competing in judo.
"The shortened season really makes a difference," Takatsuka said. "After the season, we’ll meet with the trainers and look at the data. We might want to think about lobbying to make the season a week or two longer. There are so many more injuries this year."
While traditional powerhouse programs chase the coveted state championship trophies, mighty overachievers are nabbing points in any way possible. Aiea’s girls were among the best in the Oahu Interscholastic Association even with just six wrestlers. All six qualified for states.
Aiea junior Candice Segi battled No. 2 seed Megan Aina to the finish, losing 4-3 in a 98-pound opener.
"I did really good, but I didn’t have enough time," Segi said. "Our team is hurt, but they’re wrestling really hard."
Segi bounced back to win her consolation match and will continue this morning.
Two Na Alii were injured in last week’s OIA championships. Samantha Higa (elbow, knee) opened as the fourth seed in the 114-pound class. Lindsay Villarmia (shoulder) entered unseeded at 125.
The state tourney was a new experience for Keaneau Shaw of the Laupahoehoe boys team. Shaw, a 248-pound sophomore, learned the sport for the first time this season from first-year coach Martin Makuaole, a former Kamehameha wrestler. Shaw was done yesterday after two losses in the 285-pound class.
"It’s hard wrestling against bigger guys," Shaw said. "It’s been fun, way funner than basketball. It’s more of a challenge. I just try my best when I go out there."
Shaw has learned to use one move well: the crucifix. He’s learning on the job, though.
"It was kind of rough in the beginning, but he pays attention and he listens," said Makuaole, a 190-pounder who is Shaw’s main competition at practice.
