By Friday night, Punahou’s boys wrestling team had a slight lead.
By the end of yesterday’s semifinals, the boys were in typical championship form with a large margin. It was basically over before the finals began as Punahou’s boys captured their fifth state championship in a row at Blaisdell Arena last night.
Punahou, coached by Matt Oney and Jimmy Takatsuka, accumulated 210 points to win the title handily. Kamehameha (172), Lahainaluna (137), Pearl City (125.5) and Campbell (84) rounded out the top five.
"I am so proud of the way the kids rallied," Oney said of the Buffanblu.
Their 215-pound league champion, Evan Johnson, suffered a season-ending ankle injury on Friday.
"The round after his injury, we were very flat, but they knew they had to step up for him and rally behind each other," Oney said.

Top-seeded Todd Murakawa (132-pound weight class) was clutch for Punahou, winning his second state title.
Murakawa won 13-4 over unseeded Holden Takahashi of ‘Iolani.
At 154, No. 1 seed Bryan Peralta held on for a 10-6 win over Farrington’s Chaeden Grace-Reyes to give the Buffanblu another big scoring boost — 16 points for a first-place finish.
Zachary Hernandez put icing on the cake, pinning second-seeded James Heron of Lahainaluna in the first period of their 191-pound match.
Hernandez, who was second in the 154 class last season, grew 3 inches and gained 30 pounds — yesterday’s weigh-in carried an extra 3-pound allowance. His father is Kapolei football coach Darren Hernandez.
Murakawa, Peralta and Hernandez are underclassmen.
The list of three-time state champions grew after Shayden Terukina of Kamehameha pinned unseeded Brett Will of Punahou in the 137-pound final.
His teammate, Jacob Luning-Hoshino, took his third state crown with a 10-0 victory over No. 2 Sean Hew-Len of Castle in the 142 final.
The upsets included No. 2 Chanse Uyeda, of Lahainaluna, surprising ‘Iolani’s Ian Akamine in the 147 final, denying Akamine a third title.
At 162, Second-seeded Jonathan Pico of King Kekaulike outlasted Punahou’s top-seeded Laurent Remillard, the top seed, 13-11 in overtime.
In what may have been the most anticipated match of the night, No. 2 Raynald Cooper III defeated No. 1 Patrick Sheehan of Punahou in the 173 final.
Sheehan was the returning state champ, while Cooper had won two titles, including last year’s crown at 162.
In four career matches against Sheehan, a rival from their childhood days, the two split evenly.
