Honolulu receives $8.6 million to help homeless
Honolulu has received $8.6 million in federal grants to keep 22 programs for the homeless operating for the next fiscal year.
The funds will pay for transitional housing, job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, child care and other services.
The city had to compete for the grants. The city’s application was assisted by a point-in-time census of the homeless population conducted in January 2010, a comprehensive inventory of shelter beds and services, and the identification of gaps in homeless services.
The Department of Community Services prepared the grant application.
Mayor Peter Carlisle said this month that the grants will help meet critical needs of homeless individuals and families.
