An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment yesterday charging a visiting priest from Canada in the assault of a 55-year-old woman on the grounds of a Kuliouou church earlier this month.

The indictment charges the Rev. Bothdan Borowic with kidnapping and two counts of third-degree sexual assault.

Borowic, 56, remains in custody, unable to post $75,000 bail.

The woman told police Borowic held her against her will and groped her while on the grounds of Holy Trinity Church Feb. 13.

A spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Hawaii said Borowic was staying at Makai House, at the back of Holy Trinity Church, and led services for the St. Sophia Ukrainian Greek Catholic Mission. Police said the woman is a member of the St. Sophia congregation.

Deputy Prosecutor Amy Murakami said Borowic is Ukrainian but had traveled here from Canada.
