Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Whippy earns weekly honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii senior guard Marques Whippy earned his first weekly Pacific West Conference honor of the season yesterday after helping the Seasiders to a 1-1 week.

Whippy scored 18 points in an 84-71 win at Hawaii-Hilo and 15 before fouling out in the double overtime loss to visiting Dixie State. He also led the PacWest on the week in rebounds with 38, including 32 on the defensive boards, adding a combined eight assists, six steals and four blocks.

HPU sweeps weekly awards

Hawaii Pacific’s Maile Kim was named the player of the week and teammate Melissa Kirby the pitcher of the week by the conference.

Kim, a junior utility, helped the Sea Warriors go 4-0 last week, hitting .571 with six RBIs and two homers.

Kirby picked up two wins in as many starts. She gave up four hits over six innings against Chaminade in a 6-0 nonconference shutout and then tossed a two-hitter against the Silverswords as the defending conference champions opened with a 5-0 victory.

MEN’S HONOR ROLL

» Tsung-Hsein "Jet" Chang, BYUH: The junior guard led the PacWest in scoring with a 29-point average, including 30 in the double overtime loss to Dixie State. He also had seven 3-pointers, best in the conference.
» Mamadou Diarra, CU; The junior center had 19 points and nine rebounds in the 70-62 victory over Hawaii Pacific. He was 6-for-7 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the line.
» Justin Smith, UHH: The senior forward scored a combined 32 points and added 18 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Vulcans. He had 18 points and 12 rebounds in an 84-71 loss to BYU-Hawaii.
» Zach Wilde, UHH: The junior forward averaged 13 points and five rebounds for the Vulcans.

WOMEN’S HONOR ROLL

» Hillary Hurley, UHH: The junior forward averaged 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds with four blocked shots as the Vulcans went 0-2.
» Richelle Rieben, BYUH: The senior guard scored 34 points and hit a conference-best nine 3-pointers in a 1-1 week for the Seasiders.
» Katelyn Urquhart, HPU: The junior post scored 15 points with seven rebounds in 18 minutes in a 108-46 win over Chaminade. It was the largest margin of victory in the program’s history.

Baseball

HONOR ROLL

» Troy Ajer, HPU: The junior outfielder hit .467 in the six-game series against Northwest Nazarene with five RBIs.
» Lester Akeo , HPU: The senior infielder out of Kamehameha hit .350 in the Northwest Nazarene series, scoring four times and driving in two runs.
» Blake Amaral, HPU: The senior infielder had five RBIs and scored five times against Northwest Nazarene.
» Taylor Hill, HPU: The junior right-hander struck out five, scattering six hits over 4.1 innings with a 0.00 ERA.
» Toby Inouye, HPU: The senior right-hander threw seven innings and earned the 8-6 win over Northwest Nazarene, striking out four with three earned runs.

Softball

HONOR ROLL

» Nicole Alconcel, UHH: The junior infielder out of Baldwin hit .500 as the Vulcans opened conference play with a split against Grand Canyon. She went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.
» Gabrielle Hawkins, BYUH: The freshman right-hander gave up five hits and struck out four in a complete-game 5-0 shutout of Chaminade.
» Breanne Patton, HPU: The junior pitcher/first baseman out of Campbell hit .750 and was 2-0 against Chaminade, striking out 10 in 10 innings with three earned runs.
» Caira Pires, HPU: The sophomore infielder out of Kalaheo went 5-for-11, including a grand slam, in four games against the Silverswords.
