Last day for tradewinds; vog, rain coming tomorrow

Enjoy today’s cool, sunny tradewind weather while it lasts.

Forecasters say a weather system approaching the state from the west will change the winds tonight and bring showers through the weekend.

A developing cold front is not expected to reach Kauai until Friday morning. But unsettled weather ahead of the front will bring a change in the winds and the potential heavy showers tomorrow and Friday.

"The winds are turning to the south, so that will bring some vog up from the Big Island," said John Bravender, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

Tomorrow and Friday are likely to be similar to last week, with voggy and muggy conditions and the chance of isolated heavy showers, Bravender said.

Winds are predicted to be from the south or southwest at 15 to 20 mph.

The front will likely weaken and stall between Oahu and Maui on Friday, Bravender said.

"It looks like the potential for the heaviest rain will be across Kauai and Oahu before the front starts to weaken," he said.

The chance of heavy rains will be with us through Saturday. Light tradewinds may return Sunday, although Bravender said there will still be a lot of moisture in the air so there’s still an increased chance of showers.

The good news is that sunny, cool tradewind weather should return on Monday.
