The state Board of Education voted unanimously tonight to close Queen Liliuokalani Elementary at the end of the school year.

The Kaimuki school has 98 students.

The full board voted 9-to-0 in favor of closure at a meeting at Kekaha Elementary School on Kauai.

Liliuokalani parents have come out in force against the closure, and raised concerns about the decision to vote on the matter on Kauai, rather than at an Oahu meeting.

“It’s a monumental decision and you’re (the board) taking it away from our island,” said parent Jan Bullock this morning. She added Liliuokalani supporters will appeal to the new appointed Board of Education to take up the issue again.

“We feel that this is a wonderful school that’s worth fighting for,” she said.

Meanwhile, the board also voted tonight to keep Puuhale Elementary in Kalihi open.

The department is eyeing small schools statewide for consolidation as part of push to save money.
