‘Avenue Q’ puppet play inspires trio of cookies

Last week, Manoa Valley Theatre opened "Avenue Q," a sharp-witted coming-of-age parable satirizing young adulthood. The musical, inspired by PBS’ "Sesame Street," combines a cast of humans and puppets.

The show runs through April 3, with showtimes at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Here are recipes inspired by a few characters:

Trekkie Monster Cookies (Crunchy Cookies)

1-1/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups crispy rice cereal (such as Rice Krispies)
16 ounces dark chocolate chips
Chopped nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, sift flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.

With electric mixer, cream margarine/butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Gradually add dry ingredients to creamed mixture. Add crispy rice cereal, chocolate chips and nuts if using.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 12 minutes or until brown. Makes 36 cookies.

Princeton Cookies (Oatmeal Cranberry or Raisin Cookies)

1 cup margarine or butter
1-1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups flour
2 cups cranberries or raisins
1-1/4 cup rolled oats (such as Quaker Oats)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream margarine/butter with sugar. Add egg and baking soda and mix well. Slowly add flour, then add cranberries or raisins and oatmeal. Drop by teaspoonfuls on cookie sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 36 cookies.

Kate Monster Cookies (Butter Cookies)

1 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
Cornflakes, crushed

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter and sugar in mixer. Add vanilla, then flour. Form dough into 1-inch balls, then roll in crushed cornflakes. Place on cookie sheet, flatten and bake. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Makes 36 cookies.
