Board of Water Supply crews are fixing water main breaks in Waikiki and Aina Haina today.

A 24-inch water main break at 3:22 a.m. has closed Kapahulu Avenue in both directions between Ala Wai Boulevard and Kuhio Avenue.

The break has flooded the parking lot at Jefferson Elementary School, which is not accessible from Kapahulu Avenue, said Board of Water Supply spokesman Keoni Mattos. The school remains open.

Crews are working on the water main but it is not known yet how long the repair will last, Mattos said.

The break is on a transmission line which pumps water to a reservoir and no customers are without water, Mattos said. Water is being re-routed to the reservoir while the main is repaired and no conservation measures are in effect.

Crews are also fixing an 8-inch water main break at 5080 Keikilani Circle near Nehu Playground and Aina Haina School. Mattos said 29 homes are without water and water wagon is at the scene.

The break affects local traffic only and does not affect Kalanianaole Highway.

The break in Kapahulu is the second this week in Waikiki. On Monday, a 12-inch main broke on Royal Hawaiian Avenue flooding businesses and closing that road for more than a day.
