Kauai County plans to begin charging a fee for residential garbage collection in July.

The county said Tuesday that the base rate would be $6 a month. The county expects to use the funds to cover operating expenses at refuse transfer stations.

Households requiring manual collection of up to three 32-gallon receptacles or automated collection of one 96-gallon receptacle would pay $12 per month.

Residents with an adjusted gross income of $40,000 per year or less who qualify for a low-income exemption on their property taxes will only be charged 50 percent of their fee.

A bill authorizing the fee was signed into law last September.
