Olelo youth video contest draws record number of entries
The 582 entries for this year’s eighth annual Olelo Youth Xchange set a new record, versus 575 submitted for last year. Submissions have more than doubled in the past four years.
Ten schools are participating for the first time this year, joining the public, private, charter and home schools from around the state that compete in Hawaii’s largest youth video competition.
Competition categories include public service announcement, news, short, animation and mini-documentary, and there are several sponsored subjects including the @21 Project, HI-5 Recycling, Humane Ambassador, Peacemaker, Start Living Healthy and Traffic Safety. Videos compete in elementary, intermediate and high school age divisions, while previous winners and students with professional experience compete in the Junior Expert and Expert categories.
Judges, to include members of the local news media, filmmaking professionals and subject experts, will determine the 35 divisional winners, who will receive Sony video cameras at the May 13 awards banquet.
