Phony greenbacks bring real charges

Police arrested a 29-year-old Pearl City man and a 27-year-old woman Monday morning for allegedly trying to pay their bill at the Zippy’s restaurant on Vineyard Boulevard with 20 counterfeit $1 bills.

The two were arrested on 20 counts of forgery and one count of theft, police said.

The woman also faces charges of promoting a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia when a pipe with what appeared to be crystal methamphetamine residue was found when she was searched at the police station. She also had a stolen identification card, police said.

Navy IDs sailor killed walking on H-1

The Navy has identified the Pearl Harbor sailor who was killed Sunday in a hit-and-run crash as Petty Officer 3rd Class Victor Guzman, 21, of Oceanside, Calif.

Guzman died after being struck by a vehicle while walking along the H-1 freeway near Makakilo.

Guzman served as a culinary specialist on the cruiser USS Chosin.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the sailor was walking along the westbound lanes of the H-1 just before the Makakilo offramp.

The sailor was hit by one vehicle that fled the scene. A 2007 Nissan Altima driven by a 22-year-old Mililani man also hit the sailor, but that driver stopped and called police at about 2:17 a.m., police said.

Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene.

2 swimmers off Kauai are rescued

Two swimmers were rescued in waters off Kauai’s North Shore in separate incidents Monday, Kauai County reported.

A 16-year-old Kapaa boy was bodyboarding with friends at Hanakapiai Beach just before noon when he got caught in a wave and lost his board.

Friends tried to swim out to him but were unable to assist him to shore. A hiker notified Kee Beach lifeguards, who used a personal watercraft to reach the swimmer and take him to Haena Beach, where medics treated and released him.

The second incident happened just before noon at Anini Beach. A 60-year-old man was snorkeling when he swam out too far and got caught in a rip current.

Family members and bystanders reached the man with a stand-up paddleboard and were able to lift him onto it. Rescuers in a rubber boat met them about 200 yards offshore.

Two firefighters jumped out of the boat and escorted the man to shore on the paddleboard. He declined medical assistance.

Car smashes into building in Kapaa

A 56-year-old man lost control of his red Mustang convertible Monday afternoon and plowed into a law office in Kapaa, Kauai.

No one was injured, but there was extensive damage to the car as well as to the Kuhio Highway building, which houses the law offices of Robert Grinpas and Tim Tobin.

Kauai police said the driver of the convertible was trying to park in a stall when he inadvertently hit his gas pedal and rammed into the plate-glass front of the building.
