The Hawaii Rainbows aren’t just winning games against Centenary.

They’re winning playing the right kind of baseball in doing it.

Zach Gallagher and Randy Yard combined on a five-hit shutout and Jesse Moore finished a home run shy of the cycle in a 5-0 UH victory over the Gents yesterday.

Gallagher allowed two hits in six innings and Yard worked the final three to earn the save in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,277.

"I thought that was a very business-like performance," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "We’ve viewed this series all week as a chance for us to continue to get better and I think we’re doing a good job of that."

The Rainbows (10-9) moved above .500 for the first time all season and have won a season-high four games in a row.

Hawaii had at least 11 hits for the third straight game and has held the Gents (3-9) to two runs in three games.

Gallagher got his first start of the season yesterday, improving to a perfect 3-0.

He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three to lower his ERA to 1.62, the best among any UH pitcher to start a game.

"Zach earned the start with the way he’s pitched for us this year," Trapasso said. "He did a great job keeping the ball down in the zone and it was good to get Randy in there and get him some innings."

Moore, who will start the final game of the series tonight at 6:35, played at second base yesterday with Kolten Wong moving to short.

Entering the game with only two hits in 17 at-bats, Moore outdid his season total, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

His RBI single in the second gave UH a 2-0 lead and he capped the game’s scoring with an RBI triple in the sixth.

"We’re starting to click a little bit and hitting the ball more consistently," Moore said. "I didn’t start off the season the way I wanted to, but I’m seeing the ball a lot better and trying to keep it up."

The switch between middle infielders was partly to give Wong some time at short. It also shortened Moore’s throws to first in preparation for his start today.

Hawaii will try to sweep a four-game series for the first time in exactly a year, when the ‘Bows won all four games against Air Force.

The Rainbows have increased their depth in the infield with the addition of sophomore Kalani Brackenridge, who burned his redshirt on Friday. The Kapolei graduate made his first start yesterday at third, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

"It’s very nice to get out there," Brackenridge said of the opportunity to play this season. "I played in the infield in high school and practiced a lot (in the offseason), but it was my first time playing third."

Defensively, UH has cut down on its errors, making three in three games, including one on a catcher’s interference call.

After Garrett Champion started consecutive games behind the plate, Pi’ikea Kitamura took his turn at catcher and was hit by a pitch twice.

Breland Almadova had two hits, including a double for one of UH’s five extra-base hits, and drove in two runs to up his batting average to .238 and his on-base percentage to .389.

Wong had two hits to raise his season average to a team-best .397, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

Laetten Galbraith (0-2) took the loss for Centenary, allowing six hits and two runs in three innings.

Fresno State, ranked No. 17 in the latest Baseball America poll, had its game against Washington State canceled yesterday. The Bulldogs are 13-2 with an RPI of 3, and are one of four WAC teams with winning records. San Jose State (14-6) won two of three against Seattle University over the weekend and New Mexico State (15-5) swept a four-game series against IPFW.
