UH’s Umlauft earns national honor

Hawaii opposite Jonas Umlauft was named the AVCA national men’s volleyball player of the week yesterday following his performance in UH’s two-match sweep of Long Beach State last week.

He also was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation player of the week.

The AVCA award is the first of Umlauft’s career and the first for a UH player since April 17, 2006, when Lauri Hakala received the award. It is the 16th time a UH player has been recognized with the AVCA player of the week award in the program’s history.

Umlauft had 22 kills each night against the 49ers and averaged 6.29 kills per set in the series.

Umlauft leads the nation with 5.44 kills per set while hitting for a .335 percentage, which ranks 14th nationally. He has 10 20-plus-kill matches and hit for double figures in all 20 matches he’s played in.

Also, UH moved up two spots to No. 8 in this week’s AVCA Division I-II Top 15 poll. BYU, Hawaii’s opponent Friday and Saturday, dropped one spot to No. 3 after splitting two matches with unranked Cal State Northridge last week.

Chaminade tops UHH in tennis

Chaminade got singles wins from Yanita Amaudova, Yuka Kondo and Jan Matsumoto in a 6-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in women’s tennis yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Silverswords also won all three doubles matches.

Dixie State routs UHH in baseball

Tony Nelson went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBIs to lead Dixie State to an 11-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in a Pacific West Conference yesterday at St. George, Utah.

David Keller doubled and drove in two of the three runs for the Vulcans (6-7, 3-4) in the five-inning game shortened due to bad weather.

James Mahler pitched a five-hitter for the Red Storm (15-7, 12-3).
