No discipline for officers in Census worker arrest
Three Hawaii County police officers won’t face disciplinary action after the Police Commission threw out a complaint by a temporary U.S. Census Bureau worker who was arrested after entering the property of one of the officers.
The Hawaii Tribune Herald reports the commission voted unanimously Monday that there was insufficient evidence against the officers.
The case began last March when Russell Haas was arrested after he opened an unlocked gate and walked on to the property of a Big Island resident, a county police officer, who refused to accept Census forms.
Haas says he walked off the property, but was arrested outside the gate after waiting for two other officers to arrive.
Prosecutors later dropped a trespassing charge against Haas as part of a settlement that also required police be better trained in dealing with government workers in future censuses.
