We’d stand and cheer but might lose our seat

The game’s far from over, but even the cynics in the stands will have to put a few points on the board for Team Rail this week.

Yes, there was some booing from other cities about a spotty record for the parent company of Ansaldo Honolulu, the company building the rail cars. But contract awards are moving ahead in key areas, at least.

And neither the visiting federal officials nor the Circuit Court judge weighing a major legal challenge see any major hitch. Judge Gary Won Bae Chang rejected the suit over the way reviews for burials along the route are being handled.

But even if the thing gets built, folks are wondering whether they’ll get a seat on the fancy new cars. Looking at the Ansaldo designs, in which standing room dominates, maybe not.

Shark-diving in Hawaii on Taylor’s bucket list

Hollywood is now mourning the passing of the legendary Elizabeth Taylor, but the actress did not want her obituary written a moment too soon.

As rumors flew about her ill health in 2006, Taylor fired off photos of herself shark-diving in Hawaii.

"For someone who has been in bed with a bad back, I have done all the things I’ve dreamed of," she wrote in a postcard to columnist Liz Smith. "I did get into the shark cage. It was the most exciting thing I’ve done in my life — there were 12 sharks cruising the cage."

Nobody can claim they’ve "done it all" in life, but Taylor probably came close.
