Man shot in hand near highway

Police are looking for a suspect in the shooting of a homeless man early yesterday morning in an area used by paintball players near Nimitz Highway and the Disabled American Veterans hall.

The attacker used a handgun, and the shooting was reported at 3:11 a.m. when a homeless man reported that a 49-year-old man, also believed to be camping in the area, had been shot in the hand. The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

There was no immediate description of the suspect or what triggered the shooting.

Pair rescued after boat capsizes

Big Island rescue personnel picked up two people from their overturned 12-foot aluminum boat yesterday morning near Coconut Island in Hilo Bay.

A fire helicopter deployed two specialists into the water at 10:56 a.m. and picked up the victims, who were not injured. They told firefighters that they had been clinging to the hull of the overturned boat for about an hour.

The fire rescue boat righted the overturned boat and towed it to Reeds Bay.
