Wahine double up in water polo

Sisters Carmen and Monika Eggens each scored four goals to lead the fifth-ranked Hawaii women’s water polo team to its second win of the day, a 13-4 nonconference victory over UC San Diego at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

In the earlier game, nine different Wahine scored in a 15-8 nonconference win over Cal State East Bay. Freshman Kelly McKee led UH with a career-high four goals, while Claire Pierce had four goals for the Pioneers (14-8).

Against the Tritons (8-13), the Rainbow Wahine (13-5) scored 10 unanswered goals to take an 11-2 lead after three quarters.

HPU splits with NDNU

Pinch runner Pomaikai Kalakau scored on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh to give Hawaii Pacific a 3-2 victory over Notre Dame de Namur in the second game of yesterday’s PacWest softball doubleheader at San Mateo, Calif.

The sixth-ranked Sea Warriors (18-5, 12-3) dropped the opener 8-4, with the Argos (11-13, 3-6) scoring five times in the second, four with two outs.

Vulcans win 1 on road

Brittany Spencer singled in Tessa Truong with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift Hawaii-Hilo to a 1-0 win in the second game of yesterday’s PacWest doubleheader against Academy of Art in San Francisco.

The Vulcans (9-8, 7-3) dropped the opener 2-1, with their lone run coming on Kanani Numata’s leadoff home run in the first.

Amber Waracka scattered three hits to pick up the win in the nightcap against the Urban Knights (14-8, 6-2).

The Vulcans were scheduled to play a PacWest doubleheader at Dominican today, but the games have been postponed due to weather conditions.

Grand Canyon sweeps UHH

Grand Canyon erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second en route to a 14-3 win over Hawaii-Hilo in the second game of a PacWest baseball doubleheader yesterday in Phoenix.

The Vulcans (6-11, 3-7) trailed the entire way in the opener, falling 12-6 against the host Antelopes (13-15, 9-9).

UH swimmer 32nd at NCAAs

Sophomore Luca Mazzurana placed 32nd in the preliminaries of the 100-meter butterfly on Day 2 of the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship in Minneapolis.

On Thursday, he was 50th in the 200 IM preliminaries. He finishes the competition today with the 200 fly.

State boxing finals set

Boxers from five islands will be competing in the Hawaii State/Regional Boxing Championships next weekend at Palolo Gym.

Bouts begin at 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. next Saturday. The champions advance to the U.S. Championship, June 19-26, in Colorado Springs, Colo. The top four finalists then go on to the U.S. Olympic trials.

Admission is $15. There is no charge for children 7 and under.
