Comic directs, produces and stars in ‘Godfather’

"The Last Godfather," a new Korean film released Friday, is a comedy produced and directed by Korean comic icon Shim Hyung Rae, who also produced "D-War" aka "Dragon War." The movie stars Harvey Keitel, Jason Mewes and Michael Rispoli.

CJ Entertainment says the movie, set in 1951, has Keitel portraying Don Carini, a powerful crime boss who gathers his gang to announce a successor.

Each wise guy expects to be chosen but is shocked to find out that while traveling in Asia, Carini fell in love with a woman and had a son. Now an adult, Young-gu (Shim) is to become the heir to Carini’s throne. With everyone out to get him and a hit out on his father, will Young-gu overcome these obstacles and rise to become the syndicate’s next godfather?

Also, the Hawaii International Film Festival started its Spring Showcase Friday with several Korean films on the schedule: "Cyrano Agency," "Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow," "The Recipe" and "The Unjust." For more information, go to www.HIFF.org.
