Oceanic Time Warner Cable has hired Dan Schmidt for its new general manager and executive producer position as it prepares to launch a University of Hawaii Channel, Oceanic said.

Schmidt, 53, spent 25 years at KFVE and KHNL, most as recently as programming director and director of content. He oversaw  televising of more than 100 UH events per year.

Today is Schmidt’s first day at Oceanic where he will have responsibilities  in local programming.

"I’m just really happy to be here," Schmidt said.

Oceanic cancelled a press conference previously scheduled for this morning saying it hasn’t completed other details surrounding its operation of the debuting UH Channel.

"We’re going to take some more time to make sure we can put things together the right way," said Norman Santos, Oceanic’s vice president for operations.

Schmidt is expected to have a major role in  the selection of sportscasters for UH events which Oceanic will take over from KFVE in the fall.

KFVE and its predecessors, KHNL and KIKU,  have done UH sports since 1984.
