The 45-year-old hotel is closing indefinitely because of significant structural and property damage caused by the March 11 tsunamis generated by an earthquake that hit off Japan.

The resort employed its workers through Sunday. It’s covering their health insurance through the end of April.

Kona Village Resort has asked neighboring resorts and the state’s Workforce Development Division to help the employees find new jobs.

Waves moved some of the hotel’s thatched-roof bungalows from their foundations, and damaged the hotel’s reception, main office, bars, and restaurants.

Hawaii News Now reported Monday the hotel employed 263 people.
