PHOENIX >> Lawmakers have postponed a preliminary vote on a proposed requirement that President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates show their eligibility to run for the office by proving their citizenship.
The Arizona Senate was scheduled to debate the bill Tuesday, but the vote was postponed.
The bill hasn’t yet been scheduled for another vote.
The bill would require political parties to provide the candidate’s birth certificate.
If these requirements aren’t followed, the candidate’s name won’t appear on the ballot.
So-called “birthers” have argued since the last presidential election that Obama is ineligible for the nation’s highest elected office because he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s homeland.
Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama’s citizenship, and his Hawaiian birth certificates have been made public.
