Police post video of robbery attempt
Honolulu police are asking the public for help in catching two would-be robbers who attempted a smash-and-grab robbery of a Waikele jewelry store.
Honolulu CrimeStoppers posted on its website yesterday security video from the attempted robbery of the Zales jewelry store at the Waikele Premium Outlets in hopes of generating tips to catch the suspects.
The video shows the men — one armed with a shotgun, the other carrying a hammer — entering the store and attempting to break the jewelry cases. But the cases don’t break.
The men kick the cases, smash them with a hammer and even fire a round from the shotgun, but the glass refuses to shatter.
The robbery happened at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday. Police said the men fled in a stolen silver Honda Civic, later found engulfed in flames on Lelepua Street and Leomana Place in Waipahu.
The suspects are described as being in their 20s, weighing about 140 pounds, wearing black masks and athletic shoes. One man wore a black, long-sleeve shirt and white pants; the other wore a gray, long-sleeve shirt with dark pants.
Some personnel in nearby stores say they are concerned for their safety.
Ryan Salazar, assistant supervisor at Brooks Brothers Factory Store, was working Saturday night but didn’t know anything about the robbery until he left the store and saw police officers interviewing people.
“It’s more of a common thing,” he said. “It makes me a little nervous, just general safety around the area. Being a really popular tourist spot, they (visitors) probably feel the same way. Everyone’s a little bit nervous.”
Moiliili man is ID’d as crash victim
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the bicyclist who died from injuries suffered April 4 in Moiliili as Kiyoshi Miyasato, 86. The Moiliili man died Saturday at the Queen’s Medical Center.
Miyasato was riding a white Huffy bicycle on the sidewalk on University Avenue when he was hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by a 61-year-old man, police said.
The truck had pulled out of University Square at 2615 S. King St. to head mauka on University Avenue when it struck the bicyclist, police said.
Help sought in heifer shooting case
Big Island police want information regarding the Feb. 19 shooting of a 2-year-old heifer at a dairy in Ookala.
The heifer had been shot and part of its hindquarters had been removed at Ookala Dairy off Route 19 near the 31-mile marker.
The case has been classified as theft of livestock.

Big Island crash claims 18-year-old
Hawaii County police identified the woman who died Saturday in a highway crash in North Kona as Chernell Kaili, 18, of Kailua-Kona.
Just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Kaili was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer west on Ahulani Street in Kalaoa, North Kona, when the SUV ran off the right side of the road and overturned, police said.
Kaili was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m. at Kona Community Hospital. Her passengers — two men, ages 19 and 20, and a 15-year-old girl — were taken to the hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
All the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts, police said.

It was the seventh traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with eight at this time last year.
Waikoloa man charged with stabbing son
A Waikoloa man has been charged with stabbing his son at a home on Kimo Nui street over the weekend.
Police said 50-year-old William Ford Jr. stabbed his 28-year-old son once in the chest on Friday night and then fled their Waikoloa Village home.
Fire Department rescue personnel took the victim to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
Ford turned himself in at the Kona police station in Kealakehe at about 12:50 p.m. Saturday. He was arrested and held at the cellblock while detectives from the Juvenile Aid Section, which investigates domestic violence cases, continued the investigation.
Detectives charged Ford on Sunday with first-degree assault and abuse of a family/household member. He was released after posting bail.
