Five lost Pali hikers, who spent the night in the Koolaus, were cold and hungry,  but unhurt after being airlifted from their perch above the Pali Highway’s hairpin turn, just before 7 this morning, a fire department spokesman said.

The hikers were reported missing at 5:50 p.m. yesterday but had to spend the night in the forest when search-and-rescue crews suspended the search just after 7 p.m. because of darkness and cloud cover.

The rescue operation resumed at 6 this morning. The hikers were taken by the department’s helicopter to the Pali Golf Course.

The hikers had been in communication with firefighters, but were running out of battery power on their cell phones.
