Big Island firefighters rescue injured hiker

Big Island fire personnel rescued an injured 42-year-old man who fell while hiking in a remote area on the south flank of Waipio Valley.

Fire officials said the man slipped and fell at or near a smaller waterfall on Lalakea Stream near Hiilawe Falls.

A head of a tour group called the Fire Department and reported the man had fallen 30 feet.

They received the call at 11:26 a.m. Thursday and the first unit was on scene at 11:46 a.m.

A fire helicopter crew found the man, who received moderate injuries, fire officials said.

The man was able to extricate himself and walked on his own to fire rescue personnel, fire officials said.

He was treated and transported by helicopter to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

A total of 15 fire personnel participated in the rescue.
