Mayor Wright residents sue state over alleged unsanitary conditions

Attorneys for a group of low-income residents with disabilities living in the Mayor Wright Homes public housing project are suing the state over alleged unsanitary conditions.

Attorney Victor Geminiani said the lawsuits filed Thursday in federal and state court claims residents suffer from a lack of hot water, leaking pipes, vermin infestations, overflowing trash piles and inconsistent security.

Geminiani said the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, which oversees the housing project, failed to address well-known problems for years.

The authority has said it plans to make repairs that will provide hot water to Mayor Wright residents by July at a cost of nearly $800,000.
