Olomana Trail fall kills male hiker
A man believed to be in his mid-40s apparently fell and died yesterday while attempting to traverse the treacherous second and third peaks of Olomana Trail.
Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel were called to the trail when a group of six other hikers reported that the man had become separated from them during their hike.
Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said a fire helicopter spotted the man about 150 below the saddle connecting the two peaks. Personnel were lowered to the scene, and the man was flown out to a nearby recreational area and transferred to Emergency Medical Services.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 84-year-old woman is dead following a single-vehicle crash in Wahiawa yesterday morning.
According to police, the woman was driving east on California Avenue about 150 feet east of Plum Street when she lost control of her four-door sedan, which struck a steel light pole. The crash happened at about 11:40 a.m.
The woman was taken in critical condition to an area hospital, where she later died.
Police said speed, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors. The accident occurred under clear conditions.
Girl, 3, pulled from sea and treated
A 3-year-old girl was taken to a North Shore hospital in critical condition yesterday afternoon after she nearly drowned in the ocean off Waialua, the city’s Emergency Medical Services Department reported.
The toddler was pulled from the water fronting Crozier Drive at about 2:20 p.m., and paramedics took her to a nearby hospital, EMS officials said.
Knife to the neck leads to arrest
A 28-year-old Ewa Beach woman allegedly threw a knife at her ex-boyfriend’s head and injured his neck Saturday night during an argument at her home, police said.
The 28-year-old former boyfriend was admitted to a nearby hospital after the 8:32 p.m. incident, police said.
The woman was arrested for investigation of second- degree assault.
