» Cal State Northridge senior Ridge Carpenter (Kalani ’07) finished 6-for-16 with a double, four runs, three RBIs and two stolen bases as the Matadors lost two of three against Pacific (Calif.) over the weekend.

» Northwestern junior Paul Snieder (Punahou ’08) went 5-for-11 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs as the Wildcats lost two of three against Purdue over the weekend.

» San Diego junior Zack Kometani (Punahou ’08) finished 5-for-13 with a double and four RBIs as the Toreros lost two of three to Portland over the weekend.

» Southern Utah junior Mitchell Kauweloa (Kamehameha ’08) went 8-for-16 with a home run, five RBIs and four runs scored as the Thunderbirds lost three of four games against South Dakota State over the weekend. Justin Neuhart (Molokai ’10) had three hits and scored twice and Alakai Aglipay (Punahou ’10) hit a pinch-hit, two-run single in SUU’s only win.

» Pacific (Ore.) first baseman Mike Nagamine (Mid-Pacific ’08) singled and drove in two runs in an 8-5 loss to Concordia (Calif.) last Wednesday. Michael Arakaki (Mid-Pacific ’09) singled, scored and walked twice and Rylan Tomita (Roosevelt ’09) tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and one walk.

» Northwestern College sophomore Zack Markwith (Saint Louis ’09) finished 5-for-13 with a run scored and Josh Markwith (Kalani ’08) was 4-for-13 with a double and two RBIs in a tripleheader against Bethany Lutheran on Monday.

» Saint Martin’s (Wash.) junior Travis Jones (Mililani ’08) had four hits in the series and freshman Kash Kalohelani (Kamehameha ’10) pinch hit for Jones in Game 2, getting an RBI single and scoring as the Saints took three of four against Central Washington over the weekend.

MEN’S GOLF

» San Diego junior Alex Ching (Punahou ’08) was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year last week. He was named first-team all-conference for the third year. He was Freshman of the Year in 2009. Ching is ranked 22nd in the nation by Golfstat and lost a playoff for medalist honors last Tuesday in the final round of the WCC Championship. Ching won two tournaments in the fall and his scoring average is 71.05.

WOMEN’S GOLF

» Portland State sophomore Britney Yada (Waiakea ’09) set a Big Sky championship record with a 6-under-par finish to claim individual medalist honors last Wednesday. Yada shot rounds of 72, 68 and 70, holing out from 105 yards for eagle on the first hole of the final day. It was the second career win for Yada, who becomes the third Viking ever to win the tournament.

» UCLA junior Stephanie Kono (Punahou ’08) was named to the All-Pacific 10 first team yesterday for the third straight year. Kono led the Bruins in scoring average (72.5), rounds under par (13), top-20 finishes (8) and top-10 finishes (5) during the regular season.

» Santa Clara senior Miki Ueoka (Kauai ’07) and junior Tammy Surtees (Hawaii Prep ’08) earned All-West Coast Conference honors last Wednesday. Ueoka was named to the first team for the third straight year and Surtees earned honorable mention for the second year after she was named to the first team a year ago.

» James Madison junior Nicole Sakamoto (Kalani ’08) shot a 1-over 73 on Sunday to finish a shot behind the winner in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. Sakamoto finished the tournament at 7 over to place second for the second straight year.

SOFTBALL

» New Mexico State sophomore Tehani Ka‘aihue (Kapolei, ’09) contributed a grand slam to the Aggies’ 7-1 win over Louisiana Tech last Friday. She also homered in a 5-4 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday and went 3-for-6 in the series. Senior first baseman Hoku Nohara (Kamehameha, ’07) went 3-for-8 in the series with an RBI. The Aggies lead the WAC at 14-1 and visit Hawaii for a three-game series starting Friday.

» East Carolina freshman Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin (St. Francis ’10) singled home Kai Clark (Kapolei ’09) for the only run of the game in a 1-0 vitory over UTEP on Friday. Clark doubled and drove in two runs in the second game of a doubleheader Friday and Kaluhiokalani-Glackin tripled and had two RBIs as the Pirates finished the sweep with a 6-2 win on Saturday.

» Mississippi State junior Kaili Smith (Kapolei ’08) went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-2 upset of No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday.

» Eastern Kentucky senior pitcher Noelani Esperas (Kamehameha ’07) tossed 31⁄3 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts to pick up the win and snap the Colonels’ 11-game losing streak.

» Saint Martin’s (Wash.) sophomore Joslyn Eugenio (Sacred Hearts ’09) was the tough-luck loser in a 1-0 loss to Northwest Nazarene on Saturday. Eugenio pitched all 10 innings, giving up an unearned run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

» Lewis & Clark freshman Caitlin Basilio (Mililani ’10) went 2-for-5 with a home run in her final game of the season as the Pioneers lost to George Fox 16-10 on April 17.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

» Cal State Northridge senior Brooke Doane (Kamehameha ’07) played the final home match of her career on Saturday, winning in doubles and falling in three sets in singles competition to help the Matadors to a 5-2 win over Pacific (Calif.). Doane, the school’s all-time leader in doubles victories, improved her record to 20-4 for the season and 8-0 in conference play. She is expected to be named to the All-Big West first team for the third year in a row.

» DePauw (Ind.) senior Janelle Arita (Punahou ’07) won in both No. 1 singles and doubles to help the Tigers defeat Sewanee 7-2 to claim their fourth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship on Sunday. The win gives DePauw an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III championship.

» Redlands (Calif.) senior Sara Yoshinaga (‘Iolani ’07) nabbed her third All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second-team award on Saturday. Yoshinaga won both her singles and doubles matches in a 7-2 win over California Lutheran to place third in the SCIAC tournament.

» Pacific (Ore.) freshman Kelson Kawai (Kohala ’10) placed fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 11.25 inches, and fifth in the triple jump at 43 feet, 7 inches at the Northwest Conference championships over the weekend.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

» Willamette (Ore.) sophomore Amanda Tamanaha (St. Andrew’s Priory ’09) placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:52.96 and finished 12th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:11.66 at the Northwest Conference championships over the weekend. Pacific (Ore.) junior Jenna Matsumoto (University ’08) finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.33 and seventh in the 100 hurdles in 16.52 seconds. Boxers senior Nicole Smith (Kamehameha-Maui ’07) finished fifth in the 100 meters in 13.12 seconds and fourth in the 200 with a time of 27.05. Freshman Kelii Aken-Pagdilao (Kamehameha ’10) finished fifth in the 200 at 27.06 seconds and sixth in the 100 in 13.14 seconds.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

» Brigham Young junior Futi Tavana (Kauai ’05) was selected the inaugural winner of the Off-the-Block Blocker of the Year award on Monday, given to the nation’s best front-row defensive men’s volleyball player during the regular season. Tavana leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and is second in the nation, averaging 1.5 blocks per game. He has 160 total blocks for the season, which leads the nation. He had eight kills, eight block assists and five digs in an upset loss to UC Santa Barbara in the MPSF tournament on Saturday.

» Tavana, Southern California senior Riley McKibbin (Punahou ’07) and Stanford junior Brad Lawson (‘Iolani ’08) were named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first team on Friday. Stanford’s Erik Shoji (Punahou ’08) and Spencer McLachlin (Punahou ’07) and Southern California’s Tri Bourne (Academy of the Pacific ’07) were named to the second team. Long Beach State’s Taylor Crabb (Punahou ’10) and Southern California’s Henry Cassiday (Punahou ’10) were both given honorable mention honors and named to the all-freshman team.

» Crabb hit .277 with 19 kills and 12 digs, leading the 49ers to a five-set upset of Stanford on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the MPSF tournament. Lawson hit .426 with a match-high 27 kills and 15 digs and McLachlin had 18 kills and 11 digs for the Cardinal. Shoji chipped in a match-high 16 digs and seven assists for Stanford, which will await its fate for the at-large spot into the NCAA final four.

» UC Irvine advanced to the semifinals of the MPSF tournament to take on No. 1 seed USC, which came back to beat UCLA in four sets on Saturday. McKibbin had 48 assists and nine digs andBourne had nine kills, 10 digs, two assists and two aces for the Trojans, who also got 10 digs from Cassiday.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

» Occidental (Calif.) sophomore Nanea Fujiyama (Kamehameha ’09) scored a game-high five goals with three assists and three steals and Karie Nickle (Kamehameha ’07) had two goals, three assists and three steals to lead the Tigers to a 16-10 victory over Claremont Mudd Scripps on Saturday.

» Pacific (Calif.) senior Dara Tawarahara (‘Iolani ’07) scored three of her game-high four goals in the third quarter, helping the Tigers defeat Cal State Monterey Bay 15-7 on Saturday in Tawarahara’s final home match.

» UC San Diego senior Hanalei Crowell (Kamehameha ’07) scored her only goal to cut the deficit to 6-5, but San Diego State responded with a 9-2 run to defeat the Tritons 15-7 on Friday in the annual Harper Cup.

» Harvard sophomore Aisha Price (Punahou ’09) had three goals, two assists and two steals and freshman Shayna Price (Punahou ’10) added a goal, an assist and two steals in a 16-12 win over Brown last Wednesday.

» Siena (N.Y.) senior Nicole Hagi (Kapolei ’07) scored two goals in a 14-11 loss to St. Francis (N.Y.) on Friday. The Saints’ season came to an end at 10-16 overall and 4-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

» California Lutheran junior Jane Galuzzi (Punahou ’08) scored two of her game-high three goals in the fourth quarter of a 9-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

» Redlands (Calif.) sophomore Moana Tuipulotu (Lahainaluna ’09) netted two goals in a 13-5 win over La Verne (Calif.) on Saturday to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.
