Ale, Polivka at Quarterback Club
Bob Ale, staff commodore for the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association and the U.S. Sailing Youth Championship, and Eric Polivka, coach of the Farrington High School girls water polo team, will address tomorrow’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting.
Ale, who has been involved in the Hawaii sailing community for the past 30 years, will talk about the various opportunities and programs available to young local sailors, the ILH sailing program, and HYSA’s annual Imu Regatta, an invitational event that attracts high school teams from across the country.
Polivka will speak about Farrington’s first-year team of seven inexperienced girls who lost every game but inspired an outpouring of community support after their perseverance was chronicled by Star-Advertiser columnist Lee Cataluna.
The Quarterback Club meetings are open to the public; cost is $15 per person.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., and the program begins at noon.
Moore falls short in Subaru Pro
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore lost the Subaru Pro TSBBank Women’s Surf Festival to 20-year-old Sally Fitzgibbons in Taranaki, New Zealand, yesterday.
Australia’s Fitzgibbons defeated the 18-year-old defending champion 16.00 to 8.86 to claim her second consecutive Association of Surfing Professionals women’s tour victory. With the win, Fitzgibbons stole the No. 1 position in the rankings from Moore, but only 500 points separate the two surfers.
Local surfer Coco Ho, 20, finished with her best result of the season, tying for third with Australia’s Tyler Wright.
Chun rebounds for bronze
Clarissa Chun won the bronze medal in the 105.5-pound division at the Mongolian National Wrestling Championships at Ulan Bator, Mongolia, yesterday.
Chun, a Roosevelt High graduate and the 2008 world champion, lost in the second round, but came back to finish the meet with a 3-1 record and defeated Tsogtbaatar Tsendjav of Mongolia, 0-3, 1-0, 6-0, in the bronze medal match.
Chun is a member of the U.S. national team and trains full-time in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hawaii Pacific sweeps in baseball
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team swept Academy of Art in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader yesterday.
Freshman catcher Lanan Rice-Tashima went 3-for-4 and drove in six runs as the Sea Warriors beat the Urban Knights 12-5 in the first game of the doubleheader to clinch second place in the conference.
Toby Inouye scattered nine hits and allowed one earned run over seven innings to earn the complete game win in the nightcap.
HPU (24-21, 18-12) and Academy of Art (6-37, 6-20) play another double dip today; the second game is a nonconference matchup.
