No. 5 Hawaii places sixth at tourney

No. 4 USC defeated No. 5 Hawaii 8-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo championships yesterday at the San Jose State Aquatics Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine finished sixth in the tournament.

Joelle Bekhazi scored three goals to lead the Trojans (18-6). Leonie Van Der Molen scored four goals to pace Hawaii, and Monika Eggens added two goals.

UH is awaiting a chance at one of three at-large selections into the NCAA tournament.

HPU sweeps Academy of Art

Lester Akea drove in three runs and Wade Tamaru and Max Newman had three hits each to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 12-11 victory over Academy of Art in the first game of a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader yesterday at Hans L’Orange Park.

The Sea Warriors (26-21, 19-12) finished off the sweep of the Urban Knights (6-39, 6-21) with a 22-3 victory in the second game.

Chad Bolibol drove in five runs and had three hits in the second game, and teammates Kale Sumner, David Greenstein and Jordan Rego each had three hits.

Vulcans sweep Silverswords

Jessica Peppin pitched a five-inning four-hitter to lead Hawaii-Hilo to an 8-0 victory over Chaminade in the first game of a softball doubleheader sweep yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Kanani Numata had two hits and two RBIs for the Vulcans (28-14, 21-7 Pacific West) in the opener.

Amber Waracka pitched a seven-inning five-hitter in the second game, and Aisha Sueda drove in two runs for UHH.

Chaminade dropped to 14-36 and 8-20.
