Hawaii in ninth at WAC tourney

Hawaii dropped a spot, to ninth, in yesterday’s second round of the Western Athletic Conference men’s golf championships. The Warriors are hosting the tournament at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

Hawaii shot 313 and its two-day total of 621 puts it in last place, two behind Utah State. New Mexico State is first at 8-over-par 584 after shooting 295.

Idaho’s Damian Telles leads the individual standings at 73—139. Boise State sophomore Taeksoo Kim, a St. Anthony graduate, shares 11th at 77—150.

Junior TJ Kua shot Hawaii’s low round with a 4-over 76 and is tied for 25th at 155. Freshman Tommy Yamashita is a shot ahead of him after another 77. Sophomore Henry Park is at 78—156 and tied for 28th with freshman Nainoa Calip, who bogeyed six of his first seven and shot 82 to drop 14 spots.

The tournament concludes today.

UHH in sixth at super regional

In the second round of the NCAA Division II West/Central Super Regional in Albuquerque, N.M., Hawaii-Hilo shot 1-over 289 to move up to sixth at the University of New Mexico’s Championship Course.

Hilo opened with 292 Monday in 29-degree weather and snow.

Sonoma State leads at 285—568. UC San Diego’s Keith Okasaki is first in individual scoring at 70—138. Hilo freshmen Travis Russell (73—142) and Blake Snyder (72—144) are in the top 20.

Vulcans sweep Urban Knights

Kekoa Lee went 4-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 9-6 win over Academy of Art in the first game of a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium.

The Vulcans (19-25, 15-14 PacWest) beat the Urban Knights (6-41, 6-24) in the second game, 6-3.
